His first birthday in 73 years without our mum to greet him. 

We did a good job, I think, of making the day a good one anyway. My brother's gift of Rundell's biography of John Donne certainly pleased him. 

A trailer for a documentary àbout the late, great Sidney Poitier came up on the tv. He and dad were born on the same day, and had rather different career trajectories, but I like to think they would have enjoyed each other's actorly company if they had ever met.
