Montenvers - Mer de Glace
There's only one word for today. Wow, wow, wow! Sorry, that's three ... but it has been all I have been able to say.
We decided to drive to Chamonix in the French Alps. We drove through the centre of Geneva so that we could get our first glimpse of the lake en route because I missed the turn to the motorway!
As we drove up into the mountains the scenery was spectacular and I kept pulling in to viewpoints so I could take photos and actually look rather than drive. In Chamonix we decided to treat ourselves to a tour - up the mountain on the train to Montenvers - Mer de Glace glacier - WOW! What a stunning view. (Mum - it was even better than the Grossglockner!!!)
Our trip included a cable car ride down part way to the glacier itself - it was my friend's first time on a cable car too! We then had to walk down 430 very steep steps to an ice cave. We didn't know what to expect but all I can say is WOW! We went deep into a tunnel cut into the glacier, we were surrounded by ice. They had some amazing large ice sculptures, lit by varying coloured lights and lovely soothing music playing - I could have stayed ages and we did go round the circuit twice. It was a very spiritual experience. This photo is taken from the tunnel of ice looking back out to the glacier.
Going up the steps was a lot harder! Then the cable car up and the train back down. We were ready for a lovely meal at a pavement cafe in the village before the drive home through stunning countryside.
In case you are wondering, these three days are holiday not study!
