...uphill downhill and downhill uphill?

When you instal the push/pull gear cables the wrong way round that's when!

I had to replace the gear cables on Malcolm the Multicharger as the bottom one was beginning to fray. I followed the Enviolo instructions diligently, but not diligently enough as on my first ride I quickly realised I'd got the top cable on the bottom and the bottom cable on the top. Hence why uphill was downhill and vice versa.

Doh! 

I won't make that mistake again.
