Market day

Altrincham existed well before the thirteenth century, though it doesn't appear in the Doomsday Book.

Originally the land was given to Hamon de Massey by William the Conqueror, and the estates passed through several generations of the de Massey family who were all given Hamon as their first name.

In 1290 de Massey was permitted by King Edward I to create a Charter, which allowed the town to hold a market every Tuesday. The existence of a market allowed Altrincham to grow over the years and in later times the market was allowed to expand on to Fridays and Saturdays.

Altrincham's market still survives despite the many changes that have taken place in the town, but changes in shopping habits have resulted in fewer visitors.
