Castle Drago

This is the last castle to be built in the UK for Julius Drewe , creator of Home and Colonial Stores , in 1911 (famous as the year my Dad was born).

It has a great location with stupendous views and standing above the River Teign and Devon.

Sadly the roof was made of a new material namely Bitumen which cracked and leaked from day 1 and was only cured a long time after by the total replacement of the whole roof after its takeover by the National Trust in 1974.

It replacement cost £15 million!!! Considerable more the cost of building , I think, £11 million in today’s money!!!

Well I thought that was interesting!
