Lala's Journal

I see no ships!

Photo from yesterday.
My day began with a hearing test. I’ve worn hearing aids for over ten years, and when we moved found it difficult to get transferred. Eventually in 2020 the GP arranged a NHS test at a private clinic in Folkestone. I picked the new aids up the day before lockdown came into force. The only subsequent communication was an email saying I was now discharged!
Since then I’ve bought my own batteries and tubes etc online, some of which were not as good as the original ones. I’ve notice a deterioration in recent months and made a call to the clinic, who informed me that my aids were out of warranty and I needed to be seen! Even better news was that there is now a surgery twice a week in my village. Upshot is, yes hearing has diminished and aids probably no longer as efficient as they were. Oh how things have advanced. They can even tell what letters are out of one’s hearing range, explaining how some words are just not clear, even though you can hear them. Not only do I get new aids, with Bluetooth (exciting)! But any time I need batteries etc, I can just pop along to their surgery on a Monday or Friday morning. The aids cost £950 each, and free on the NHS. Just as well or I’d have continued to be the person who says ‘pardon’ to every sentence!

Straight to work for meetings and to deal with enquiries and then I ‘shut up shop’ for the next six days!
