Brooklyn, It's Magic.
OK, OK, so no one knows what the title is in reference to. In the early '80s my Dad, who directed TV commercials for a living, did a bunch of spots for Brooklyn chewing gum which was a (maybe still is?) brand sold in Italy. 1983 was the 100th anniversary of the Brooklyn Bridge and he filmed all the activities that day to be used in one of the commercials. I was lucky enough to work as a Production Assistant and had press credentials and was able to get up close for a lot of the ceremonies and fireworks. I still have pictures of then Mayor Ed Koch. Good memories.
So I had a dead spot of two hours between meetings and did something I had always wanted to do. It was fueled even further by a book that I am currently reading about the conception and building of the "Great East River Bridge". I took the C train to High Street in Brooklyn, came out of the station and banged a left then a right and walked back to Manhattan over the Brooklyn bridge. Very Cool. At one point it started to rain and I had no umbrella so I hunkered down with about 50 tourists under the relative protection of the arch closet to NYC.
I recommend to anyone who has never done this before to take the walk and immerse yourself in a little history. Just an amazing accomplishment for the 1800's and the fact that it's still going strong today.
