R-100 Airship

Back Blip. Friday 9th February 2024.

After a late breakfast at the Beach Hut cafe.
( not as good as yesterday) we set off home.
Weather still wet but not as much wind.
It turned foggy and the road was flooded in many places. In one village a fire engine was pumping water away.

Stopped at Howden to visit the butchers which was closed last time.
This time we managed to buy 3 pheasants fir £10. Excellent value even if they were ones he had frozen earlier in the year.
Also called at the wine shop to buy a few bottles of one of our favourite South African wines.

Walking back a different path to the car park we noticed some plaques set into the pavement.
Then came across this larger plaque explaining all about the Airship History Trail.
We had no idea that the R-100 Airship was built at Howden.
Designed by Barnes Wallis and Nevil Shute Norway and launched in 1929.
The plaques along the Market Place mark the length which was 216m. ( 709 ft)

Howden doesn’t just have a part ruined Minster. There is so much more to explore on our next visit. Hopefully in summer.

The first snow we saw was as we came off the M62 at junction 27. Only a few pockets left and some in our garden.
