Two for One..

One visit..two exhibits.. Our local art gallery is currently featuring the work of two artists, a painter and a photographer.

A Journey From and To Abstraction covers the career of painter Michèle LaRose, and "reflects her long standing fascination with abstraction and her development over time". Her abstract paintings and decorated boxes are housed in the main gallery giving them the highest profile, but I also really liked her more traditional paintings that share space with them in other rooms. They made me want to get out my watercolours and try her techniques!  extra)

In another special space, and along all the hallways of the building are photographs comprising the exhibit The Air of Freedom: Aerial Photographs of Ukraine. In 2016, Ukrainian photographer Zinoviy Pidperyhora  "took to the skies" to capture panoramic images of his homeland - the countryside, urban centres,  cultural and historic buildings, including World Heritage sites. I thought that this excerpt from the exhibit description said it best....

"The Air of Freedom: Aerial Photographs of Ukraine is many things. It is a site of dialogue, a gathering of imagery where words are not enough. Through his expansive catalogue of images, Pidperyhora prompts us to retain a special memory: to recall the history and beauty of Ukraine"

I will remember that every time I see those images of war-torn Ukraine on my TV screen and in my newpsaper.
