New Lines

The local street that featured on the news last week after the implementation of the pavement parking ban now has new double yellow lines to stop people parking on both sides of the road and causing an obstruction. It clearly proved to be too much to ask motorists to judge whether parking where they wanted would block the road. Surely it was a simple question - 'is there a car parked on the opposite side of the road?' If 'yes', then look for somewhere else to park. Perhaps a brief thought about disabled parking bays although presumably they don't trump the more general rules of the road and therefore if there was a car parked opposite a disabled parking bay that would render the space unusable. There has been much local angst about it with delivery vans and emergency vehicles unable to get down the street, or the next one, and numerous dings and scrapes of parked cars. The double yellows were painted yesterday, although the rapid response has meant they have worked round the existing disabled bays, losing even more parking spaces as the clear side of the road flips from side to side. Presumably the longer term answer will be parking down one side, incorporating any disabled bays, and double yellows on the other, just as it is in our street. Feeling a bit better but still not 100% so didn't go out for long.
