Stoned

Another stained glass window designed by James Powell & Sons in St Peter's Church, Chailey. this depicts the stoning of St Stephen. The window was installed in 1915. I sometimes wonder what the atmosphere was like then. George Cheesman, aged 21, had just been killed in action in fighting with the Royal Fusiliers in the Dardanelles campaign. He was the fifth Chailey man to die since October 1914. More than sixty others were to follow.
