Maria, looking back, facing forward
Maria spent the morning after the funeral making fresh tortillas for all of us departing to return to our lives, leaving her in a quiet house. Now the truth of this enormous change will settle in for her. She married Juan when they were teenagers and has been his care-giver since he had a stroke in 2016.
Extras are Evan, sitting in his grandfather's wheelchair, making the traditional mask with his tortilla; and Bella, showing me the Villarreal mail box (designed by Maria) painted as a school bus, with photos of Bella's family and their dog looking out the windows.
We returned to Portland after Seth drove a rental car 3 hours through epochal rain storms and flash flooding (in this area that is usually a desert) to get to the airport. I have posted backblips for the preceding two days, with the Viewing and the Funeral, for January 30th and 31st.
