Trams....maybe someday...
at least in Edinburgh. The idea of spending all that money to put trams back on to Edinburgh streets made my old Mum stand on her head and spit nickels. She could remember when the trams were done away with because they interfered with vehicle traffic. She was also quick to point out that they were replaced with a good, and largely reliable, bus network.
We have had a "light rail" line of around 19 miles in length here, for a couple of years - we didn't have much of a bus service to replace but the rest of the arguments for and against were pretty similar. Both here and in Edinburgh, it's anyone's guess whether these initial lines will ultimately be the first stages of growing networks or expensive white elephants, but there will be less trouble with rust out here.
