Lungwort
Went for a walk in a local wood today. Lots of twigs and small branches on the path, from the recent gales, and also a lot of quite large chunks of lichen, like this Lungwort, also known as lettuce lichen for obvious reasons. There must be a lot of it growing in the upper canopies of the Douglas Firs, but you don't normally see it from the ground and only the recent gales brought it to my attention. I was intrigued by the name so I looked it up and indeed it was, and apparently still is, used as a traditional remedy for respiratory problems, such as coughs, colds, bronchitis and asthma. How effective it is I do not know.
