A Punchy Poker Face Profile
As you might possibly be able to tell today's image is very much an emergency blip. I spotted this brass poker next to our fireplace - I'm not sure where it came from and it's never been used for its intended purpose as we've never had a real fire either. It didn't even realise it was Mr Punch until I turned it to the side and could properly see that iconically distinctive profile.
Rather than the obvious reference to Punch & Judy it brought back memories of reading "Rivers of London", an urban fantasy novel by Ben Aaronovitch. The novel centres on the adventures of Peter Grant, a young officer in the Metropolitan Police: who following an unexpected encounter with a ghost, is recruited into the small branch of the Met that deals with magic and the supernatural.
Having become the first apprentice wizard in over seventy years he must find out what is possessing ordinary people, or those who have long since died, and turning them into vicious killers - including a vengeful revenant actor, formerly of the Theatre Royal in Convent Garden, who adopts the persona of Mr Punch to wreak havoc throughout modern day London, whilst also trying to broker peace between the two warring gods of the River Thames and their respective families. Just your everyday run of the mill plot then! :-)
