New Challenge – Secret Edinburgh (1)
I got a new book for Christmas called ‘Secret Edinburgh’ and it lists some 143 curiosities in and around Edinburgh. I intend to take a wander to many of these places and will blip them as and when they are visited, the sites are from as far East as Aberlady, West as Winchburgh, South to Straiton and North to Granton.
It might take a while.
Today’s effort is the one of the closest to the house just off Easter Rd (Albion Rd) where this wee sign is probably one of the last ones existing indicates the extent (or boundaries) between Edinburgh and Leith. Both places grew up through the centuries eventually meeting most notably at Pilrig where the two differing tram systems met at the ‘Pilrig Muddle’ Folk had to get off one and get on the other system to complete their trip. Leith and Edinburgh also had differing licensing hours with Leith giving their residents an extra half of drinking hence the Boundary Bar on Leith Walk has (or had) a brass line on the floor to delineate the differing licencing areas. The two councils were unified finally in 1920, a plebiscite was enacted with both cities voting 6:1 in favour of keeping them separate but councils do what they do even today and ignored the public and joined anyway.
From this sign if you headed to the right you are only about 200m away from Easter Rd stadium.
Hopefully my next visit to ‘Secret Edinburgh’ will be more photogenic, we’ll see!
