The Tidal Basin
The Jefferson Memorial is the focal point of the Tidal Basin, but the cherry blossom trees are what draws the crowds.
Unfortunately, this year will be the last for these trees that create that magnificent rim of pink around Washington, DC's Tidal Basin in the spring.
Currently, water flows over the walls twice a day at high tide, flooding the roots of the trees. The trees have become deformed and are dying. Sea rise and ground sinking have caused the water level to rise by 4 feet.
A 2-year rehabilitation project is set to begin after this year's blossoms fade. The protective walls will be built 5 feet higher and the old trees will be replaced with new ones.
