Holy Holly Day, the battle of Nantwich

Yesterday I went to Nantwich in Cheshire to see the re enactment of the Battle of Nantwich by The Sealed Knot society.  It was a battle in the English Civil War between the Royalists (Cavaliers) who were loyal to King Charles 1 and Parliamentarians (Roundheads) in 1644.

The town supported Parliament and was surrounded by Royalists and under seige.  The Parliamentarian army rescued the town at the Battle of Nantwich.  It was named Holy Holly Day and people wore holly in their hats to celebrate it.

I went to see the reenactment with O and family.  There were lots of different regiments represented, they marched through town and there were various formalities.  We then followed them to where the battle was re enacted.  It was very well done with canonfire, gunfire, fighting with pikes etc.  Very spectacular!

I have a particular interest as one of my ancestors was one of the judges that sentenced the king to death and his name is on the king's death warrant.

There are some extra photos if anyone is interested.
