William Laud (1573–1645) was an influential divine who rose to become Archbishop of Canterbury, the most senior clergyman in the Church of England, in 1633. With the support of Charles I, Laud championed the enforcement of uniform High Church worship, which met with opposition from Puritans across the kingdom.
