DAY EIGHTEEN (Adelaide)
Australia Day. Which meant that lots of cafes etc were shut. We eventually found one that was open to have breakfast in. Then we walked round a few streets and found the Art Gallery. It was well worth a visit (Spot us in the big silvery egg outside the gallery). Some amazing pieces (and a few 'challenging' ones) but the highlight for me was a quandong cheescake disguised as a small, perfect scone.
We then jumped on the free bus that goes right around the city. It goes for miles, away out in some very nice suburbs, past lovely parks, the Adelaide Oval, and the Zoo. We hopped off again as we got near our street.
There was a big Australia Day rally with hundreds of folk under cover - it was too hot to hang around, but there were plenty of Aborigines with protest placards. The other two fit folk then took the tram to Glenelg, a beach suburb, which had lots of shops, it seems. They both bought a few irresistible items, JR is wearing hers this evening.
I came back to the hotel to get the helpful young reception lass to ring up the agents to confirm our upcoming trips. Then I watched the tennis. I'm watching the next semi this evening, after we've been out for a meal. Italian tonight - very good pizza, a rocket and pear salad, and lamb skewers. There were two gorgeous Samoyed puppies in a big basket just outside a shop on the pavement.
We have an early start for our exciting Kangaroo Island trip tomorrow.
* A quandong is a South Australia fruit, or Wild Peach.
