The Experiments Continue. Leitz Summicron 50mm DR
In consultation with the Art Department, I have been trying to come up with a decorative design to cover the floating panels of a blanket chest for the livingroom. There have been numerous attempts at marquetry, all of which have left us unconvinced. Marquetry is a very special skill: not only in design but execution. I could figure out the execution but I don't have the artistic inspiration. So my Editor said: What about Decoupage? This technique uses decorative papers applied to a painted or gilded surface, and held in place by embedding in a layer of varnish. Once dry and secure, more varnish is applied over the paper to protect it. Editor ordered some samples of Japanese rice papers - actually they come from Nepal -, we attached our favorites to sample boards, and I made up a small length of walnut frame. Here it is. Both Art and Production Departments seem happy. More paper has been ordered. We have a go!
