Film Review: 3000 Miles to Graceland
Quentin Tarantino has a lot to answer for.
Despite the fact that he's been silent since "Jackie Brown" his influence is still all over the screen. In "3000 Miles to Graceland" his obsessions with blood, violence, pop culture and very cool men is back with a bang.
It's the story of Murphy (Kevin Costner) a completely deranged killer who may or may not be the illegitimate son of Elvis and leads a group of ex-jailbirds including Kurt Russell, David Arquette and Christian Slater to a raid on a Vegas casino. However "Elvis Week" is in full swing there so obviously Elvis disguises are in order. Cue a very stylish set-piece of the Elviseses (Elvi?) shooting up the casino while an impersonator onstage shakes his bon-bon.
The robbery goes off without a hitch, but the gang falls apart in a hail of
gunfire and Kurt finds himself being hunted by Murphy for the money. This is complicated by the fact that he doesn't have it. It's been ripped off by Courtney Cox (what WOULD Chandler say?) as she drives off with the loot in her car, leaving Kurt to take car of her wise-mouthed son.
"Three Thousand Miles to Graceland" is undoubtedly too long, too sure of its own cool and unfortunately has too many lapses in logic to make a great crime thriller. But at the same time, there are lots of good lines, plenty of great cameo appearances (Jon Lovitz, Ice T) and a great baddie in Costner on the comeback trail. It's stylish, funny, and absolutely gorgeous to look at.
That reminds me - Baz Luhrmann has a lot to answer for too.
