A Meandering Life...

Behave with honour while you stay

We drove over to Leyburn where we visited a large auction house to see what was on display. The displays were being changed but upstairs was available to view.

Much of the show cases have personal collections that will be auctioned in the coming weeks. This time there was a lovely collection of wood turned items, some very colourful pottery and older furniture.

The one thing that caught my eye was the tobacco box, looks old and I suspect it might have been in a pub or suchlike. The wording says: "Fill your pipe One half penny Pay And Behave with honour while you STAY" . An early vending machine I'm guessing.

There was also a large display of vintage photographs showing Swaledale villages in the late 19th century. MrsS commented that some of the farms and barns look the same as today. It was if someone had just 'aged' the photographs. To me it made the point it is always important to include people because the ones that had were dated by their clothes and features. It's why I try to include people when doing city or landscapes, what is mundane to us will intrigue future generations.
