Icing sugar mountains

It’s our day to visit G’s mum, so our return journey just has to be through Eryri’s heartland. It’s a beautifully bright January day, and whilst the promised snowfall has been far lighter than expected, the icing sugar dusted mountains are so beautiful.

I love the way this delicate coating highlights the features of the land, clinging to rock crevices and indentations, contrasting with the golden browns of winter vegetation on the lower slopes. Tiny figures clamber almost invisibly on Yr Wyddfa’s peak, and the daytime moon hovers mysteriously above the mountains.

The edges of Llynnau Mymbyr turn to ice, not deterring two wild swimmers who clamber gingerly along the frosty edges, ungainly in their thermal robes. We exchange greetings; I can’t imagine breaking through that icy water, but they seem strangely exhilarated at the prospect!

Leaving behind the mountains proper, G takes the back road home across the coastal hinterland where the lightest coatings of snow turn the gently rolling agricultural land into a pastel coloured  wonderland.

Hard to choose today, so it’s an Eryri set. My main - for now at least - is Yr Wyddfa from Llynnau Mymbyr, with other views in extras.
