Jewel Orchid ( Ludisia discolor )
On one of our usual coffee and garden centre visits with Kanyl I spotted this unusual orchid. Unusually it isn't grown for the flowers, it is grown as a foliage plant. It is said to be easy to grow but I haven't tried so can't comment. Also unlike other orchids it is easy to propagate, which leaves you wondering why they usually command a high price - £19 in this case (before being reduced to £5.99).
They are said to like indirect light but not deep shade, being kept damp but not standing in water. They aren't hungry plants so feeding two or three times a year is all that is necessary.
