Marconi and his first radio transmission
On 13th May 1897, Guglielmo Marconi made the first radio transmission across open water between Flat Holm island and Lavernock point near Penarth. Unable to interest his own Italian Government in his project he brought his telegraphy system to Wales and together with Post Office engineer George Kemp using a 50m transmitter on Flat Holm and a 30 metre receiving mast madee his historical transmession. The message sent by Morse Code is "Are you ready" and the original signed message now resides in the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff.
I took this blip from Caerphilly Mountain (really more of a high hill than a mountain!) looking across the city centre to the Bristol channel. The flat island is Flat Holm and the more more elevated island is Steep Holm.
For rugby enthusiasts, you can also make out the roof supporting towers of the Principality Stadium.
