King Robert the Bruce...

...King of Scots.

Back to Aberdeen today for an extended stay until the end of the campaign.

I had a trip into the Town House taking colleagues into the postal vote opening and it gave me the opportunity for a quick blip of this statue of King Robert the Bruce outside Marischal College.

The statue is a relatively new feature to the streets of the Granite City only being unveiled on the 9th of May 2011. It was commissioned following a motion to the council by my good friend Kevin Stewart MSP for Aberdeen Central but at that time Depute Leader of Aberdeen City Council.

It's a striking sculpture that sculptor Alan B Herriot created.

The statue commentates King Robert The Bruce's links with the City of Aberdeen and was funded from the Common Good Fund, a fund originated by King Robert the Bruce as the result of a charter he issued in 1319.

Friends in Aberdeen revealed that as they made their way back into the City from the AECC after the historic 2011 Scottish Parliament Election Count, when the SNP won all three city constituencies in the city, King Robert the Bruce was being lowered on to his plinth in readiness for the unveiling three days later. What a fantastic memory:-)
