A Place Beyond Belief
The only vestige of the 6:30 am ferry leaving Stromness for Scrabster this morning was the eerie sound of its fog horn echoing around the town at intervals, as it slid through the thick haar unseen.
It would have been impossible for smaller boats to have seen it when it was invisible to me 150 yards away from where I stood at the window.
The haar disappeared in favour of heavy rain, but that in turn has stopped and a glint of sunshine has appeared while we pack for a weekend jaunt to latitude 60 and Lerwick, giving us hope that it will stay dry if not warm.
So much for midsummer 2013.
His Lordship has been hypnotised for the trip; if latitude 59 is not to his liking, then in his mind, it can only get worse.
Meanwhile we have most of the day homeless until our ferry leaves Kirkwall at 23:45 tonight.
This is a sign outside the Pier Art Centre which is hosting special exhibitions for the St Magnus Festival by Nathan Coley and Jim Pattison and while it applies to the work of Nathan Coley, it echoes my sentiments about Orkney, and possibly in a different sense by HL.
