Cherax destructor
Buoyed by the success of my parrot stalking earlier in the week, today I went hunting for marine life, and found these yabbies - already cooked, too! - at the Bay Marlin fish shop. Yabbies are a freshwater crayfish found in various parts of Australia in rivers, swamps, reservoirs and farm dams. Their fancy name of Cherax destructor comes from their propensity to burrow, during periods of drought, into levee and dam walls, causing considerable damage in their quest for moisture. They are generally between 10-20cm (4-8in), but occasionally grow longer. And boiled, they are sweet tucker.
