A Black Cloud Hangs Over the Crepe Myrtle Trees
Once upon a time, two neighbors hoped for a tree-lined shaded street, so they each planted a Crepe Myrtle tree in the sidewalk by the white picket fences of their front yards. The neighbor directly across the street, planted two palm trees right in front of the triplex apartment. No other neighbors on the block ever planted any trees. The two crepe myrtles and pair of palms did not create the envisioned lovely tree-lined shaded street. The Crepe Myrtles were beautiful and cast enough shade for the two coveted parking spots below their branches. The twin palms grew too tall to cast any shade at all. The Crepe Myrtles burst out of their too small holes , lifting the cement, so every couple of years, the neighbors had to pay a lot of money to repair the public sidewalk. The palms across the street dropped their hard fronds and were home to rodents. The dream of lovely leafy trees shading a tranquil street in reality became a bit of a black cloud. Today, one Crepe Myrtle became a load of wood chips and a cord of firewood. A notice has been posted that the towering twin palm trees will be removed. What will happen to the remaining Crepe Myrtle when it becomes the only tree on the block?
