Thistlehead

Thistles are going to seed. There are both Californian thistles with their smaller flowers and the larger seed heads of variegated thistle (shown here) in the Britten Reserve. Lots of variegated thistle plants germinate and grow in dry years when the grass opens up creating bare sites for the seedlings to take root. .
