St Cuthbert
Some of you will be familiar with the story of St Cuthbert, whose coffin was exhumed from Lindisfarne in AD 875 and carried around by monks to escape the Vikings. They finally arrived in Durham in 993 where is coffin was laid to rest permanently and Durham Cathedral was built up around his shrine. What fascinates me is the fact that the monks travelled to the west coast of Cumbria on their journey from Lindisfarne to Durham, hardly on the way. Many churches dedicated to the saint, mark his journey.
Today we visited St Cuthbert's church in Aldingham, on the coast south of Ulverston. A delightful spot on Morecambe Bay.
You can see the church has expanded from the original chapel that dates back to Anglo Saxon times. See collage in extras.
