Stiff Penalty!

"Any Person who Omits to Shut and Fasten this Gate is Liable to a Penalty Not Exceeding Forty Shillings"

We walked through the old hamlet of Toller Whelme this morning and were saddened to see that an ancient manor house seems to have been left to rot over the last 18 months.  This gate and its warning of penalty is just outside the garden of the manor house.

In the Extra, an old sign and an older one; we wondered why the horrible newer one was installed . . .
