A bit of blue
Just a bit.
I'd intended to do a macro of a blue agapanthus, but discovered this insect and ditched the aggie idea..
I think it's a fly, but not like any I've seen before.
I've also posted it in extras in the hope that one of the many entomologists in blipland can identify it.
Here is the response from Ciaran at the Australian Museum:
Your photo is spectacular, easily one of the sharpest images of an insect we have ever received! The insect is a fly from the family Pelecorhynchidae, and its members are all nectar feeders, often on flowers from the family Myrtaceae. Your particular individual may be one of the rarer species of the genus Pelecorhynchus. We're not able to identify the species since the differences between species are microscopic and require a specimen in person, a microscope and a detailed key. Well spotted!
Take a look here for the page of the genus: https://bie.ala.org.au/species/https://biodiversity.org.au/afd/taxa/f7192612-7cf1-4cbe-b4c4-25369a68b200
Thanks for hosting Ilja.
