Grumpy Old Man

A garden room with a view

Phew - quite a windy night!  I don't mind the rain and I don't mind the cold, but I really don't like the wind!

I met a Keep Oban Beautiful colleague this morning who wanted to show me a potential garden project. A property along Ardconnel Terrace, which I believe is owned by St John's Cathedral in the town, has a piece of land, as do the other properties nearby, on the other side of the road, on a slope overlooking the bay. I remember a previous incumbent telling me that he wanted to use the garden as a place for passers-by to sit and enjoy the view, but apparently moved on before he could do this.

The next inhabitant approached the Green Shoots group, but they're involved in a new vegetable garden at Dunollie and don't have the time or volunteers to become involved. They then approached Keep Oban Beautiful, hence the visit this morning. It will need looking into, but if we can sort out a legal agreement that suits us both, then it might be an interesting project.

The area has already been fenced and a handrail provided beside the steps and would also involve levelling a flat area to provide seating, clearing out a lot of prunings from past activity and planting some interesting shrubs. My Blip doesn't really show the site well, but it looks out across the bay to Mull and on sunny days will be a wonderful place to sit. We would invite passing visitors - and locals - to relax and enjoy the view. If this comes off it would be an alternative to improving the garden at McCaig's Tower, which is probably a goner now.

Daughter Two was coming over from Edinburgh today, but all the Glasgow-Oban trains were cancelled, so she had to take the replacement bus from Glasgow. Took a while, but she made it eventually. Daughter One is hoping to come over from Mull tomorrow, weather permitting!
