St Mary's

On another rainy day I dragged Mr P out to visit the interior of two local churches.  The main object was the old church of St Martins in Bowness which has an unbelievably ancient stained glass window but a Blip of that that will have to wait for another day because I was rather taken by the wooden roof in St Mary's in Windermere.  This  much younger church dates back to the arrival of the railway in Windermere  and the Victorian building spree . The church suffered an arson attack in 1988 which destroyed the roof and caused extensive damage to the interior.  Somehow they raised the money to install this beautiful wooden roof. They are so nervous now about leaving the church open,  that's it's only open to visitors for one hour a week on a Wednesday.  Fortunately for us, two helpful ladies were setting up the church for a school carol service.  They let us in on a Monday, told us the history, turned on the lights and were welcoming.
