Sugar The Pill, A Beetle Not A Rabbit Dropping

After a walk with my dog I felt something crawling on the back of my neck. It turned out to be this gorgeous little pill beetle. I have noticed them for the first time this season. They love to climb to the top of a blade of grass and just sit there.

The name Pill Beetle stems from their ability to retract all appendages into grooves underneath the body, feigning death in this manner and resembling a rabbit dropping. As you can see the jaws and antennae are tucked away too leaving a little round smiley face visible. :)
