With fewer Christmas cards now being sent, a friend was saying that many children now will not have the excitement of hearing a pile of Christmas cards landing through the door. It was interesting trying to guess who sent the cards by looking at the handwritten addresses and the postmarks. Now addresses are frequently printed on labels and postmarks are no longer local and could be of a centre many miles away such as two of these Edinburgh postmarks which were posted 48 miles apart. In this digital age, e-cards or text greetings are popular and cost a fraction of the cost of conventional cards and postage and also save on the need for recycling or landfill. However the different designs of cards can be easily displayed for all to see without having to turn on a screen and I am happy to continue the tradition and remember distant friends by sending cards
