Slightly foxed
The roses don't seem to like the summer weather any more than we do. I've always liked the term "slightly foxed" to describe the battered pages of well-read secondhand books, and that's what these petals reminded me of. Go large to see the wrinkles and browned edges. Like tulips, roses look good even when they are decaying.
And: serendipity, I googled the words "slightly foxed" to see if I could find any handy quotes for this blip. I didn't -- instead I found a literary magazine that sounds right up my street, celebrating forgotten books and authors. They also re-issue out-of-print books in beautifully produced editions. I'm highly tempted to subscribe!
