Kicking the can down the road

The pic is your basic can of fizzy drink. Fizzy drinks of course are many and varied - I've blipped before about putting the ring-pull back in the can and my bewilderment with that simple process. It's also a weird thing - I'm no scientist of course - that aspartame is included in fizzy drinks in the UK but is not permitted for example in New York.

But I took the pic to merely illustrate the phrase. I heard it tonight in a tv programme - it means dilly-dallying, ignoring the portents to carry on as normal. I guess the suggested alternative is putting the can in the recycling, or recycling your plan and changing direction for the better good. I'm currently kicking a couple of cans down the road, when really I should be putting one foot in front of the other and ambling or at best, strolling. I'm working at not kicking so many cans down as many roads. You'll also be glad to know that I'm also working at not extending a metaphor too far. That can is being kicked.
