1915: Ford builds its one millionth car
Quote Of The Day
"With twenty-five assembly plants ..... and with a big factory in Detroit assembling so many cars a day, we passed the millionth mark without knowing it."
(The Ford Times )
There are now sixty-five Ford factories worldwide. Last year alone, Ford sold 4.2 million vehicles. There are now an estimated 1.74 billion cars in the world. The idea that a car equates to freedom becomes increasingly untenable as roads become increasingly congested. Bicycles and feet offer more freedom, or so it seems to me.
Also, the need to accommodate all this traffic, and the need to provide home comforts for the traveller, has resulted in departure points and destinations becoming almost indistinguishable. "This articulate conception has only bought us all more of the same." Indeed it has.
Perhaps we have reached the end of the road for the personal road vehicle.
