To keep the world we know
I heard this song again by Bruce Cockburn and Susan Aglukark this morning and thought about COP28 happening just now in Dubai. Have to wonder if any of the decisions made will have a significant effect on climate changes happening all over our world. I was glad to find a video with the lyrics included. They are so appropriate and the images in the video fit perfectly. This is a photo from my world a few steps from our door on a day of constant rain. We're in the middle of another atmospheric river, not as bad as the one we had in November 2021 that caused so much devastation with flooding in many parts of the province, but still bad enough to cause concern about flooding and damage. We took a drive to see if there was any flooding with the rain and high tides, none where we might expect to see some. If the wind picks up, there could definitely be debris all over the road in some places. For the past few summers, we've worried about drought and wild fires. The number of wild fires and the millions of acres burned across Canada was unprecedented last year. What do we have to do to keep the world we know? What should those in power be doing? More to the point, what are they willing to do? I worry about the world we're leaving our granddaughters, all children, and future generations.
Bruce Cockburn and Susan Aglukark are fantastic Canadian musicians. This is the translation of Susan Aglukark's chorus that she sings in her language, Inuktitut:
'This is one world, one chance
It’s the only world we have
Here it is. This is it – one world
It’s the only world we have'
