The Society's Share @SMWSQueenStreet

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society is renowned for producing very special whisky, however, tonight, I had the good fortune to be one of the first people to experience an extra special whisky experience. The premise of the society is that they bottle single casks of whisky and sell them which means at some stage all the bottles have been consumed and that cask can never again be recreated. However, when bottling a cask of whisky there is always the odd drop or two left over and that is passed to the society as well. You can imagine after a few years that these small bottles of left-overs start to take up a fair bit of space and so what better way to get rid of them than offering them to members to remember the finest drams available and also throw in a meal from the bar menu for the paltry sum of £35 each.

Being the first people to attend one of these tastings we were provided with the entire list of available bottlings and the one that I jumped for straight away was my favourite dram ever! A 40 year old Longmorn called Liquid Heaven - this dram used to sell originally at £25 per measure and is still fantastic. I have about quarter of a bottle left from my original purchase three years ago and it's lovely to have a little refill to keep the memories flowing of this amazing dram. We were also treated to a superb Japanese dram from Yamizaki called A Cigar Smoking Geisha and a wonderful Laphroig with the name "Mouth-coating, tongue-roasting, tooth-stripping, palate punching' which finished the night.

Any members of the society should jump at this offer and I think I'll be looking for another group of four to go again before these fine drams run out. In the original 7.55 bottle there are a few drops of this dram left and I think that will be taking pride of place somewhere, never to be opened again so at some stage I can look at this bottle and know that those few drops are the last that exist of a wonderful drink.
