So, it transpires that optical inputs are still a thing and, indeed, in our set-up, a necessary thing to get iPlayer-via-Chromecast sound through the amp (despite the fact that audio has a return path via the HDMI cable, but, hey, I suspect more software engineers than users were involved in the design).
