Catching the (f)light

I often wonder how spiders get through the winter months ... there appears to be little, if any, insect life about at the moment – and frosts predicted for the next few nights in eastern England. Do they abandon their webs and hibernate? Or just hang around in the hope that a passing non-seasonal fly will buzz through inadvertently?
