St Cuthbert's Church...not cathedral...
I've been thinking of this place as a cathedral but looking at my notes now I find it is in fact a parish church. I think the misconception comes from the grandeur and size of it.
I walk past this every day I go to work. I generally walk right through it's grounds and graveyard because it's a good way to cut out the Princes Street bustle making the journey from bus to office very pleasant. The outside of the church is very impressive with a huge bulbous apse on the back facing Princes Street Gardens. The inside is equally if not even more impressive and belittling when standing alone in the middle of it messing about with a camera.
This is the inside of the aspe. The church was built in it's present form in 1894 and the frieze just below the windows is made of alabaster and depicts Da Vinci's Last Supper.
It was commissioned to by the Minister of the day, Dr James Macgregor to celebrate 50 years of ministry.
Another point of note, I was informed that Agatha Christie was married in the small chapel at the entrance to the church.
If you've never been in, I strongly suggest giving it a wee visit, it's awesome in the true sense of the word.
