Current read and a sad event

Started this one today. I've had it ages but I kept putting off reading it. It's a good story so far.
A day of gales. I ventured out in the garden to collect some leaves but wasn't out there long as it was horrible! I did the drive and side path plus the back garden patio but never went near the front garden. Tomorrow is another day.
It's my mum's birthday tomorrow and she'll be 95. I took her card and pressies round today and will go to see her tomorrow. My daughter  Karen, my granddaughter Caroline and great grandson Elliott will be visiting with me. Karen and Caroline wanted to take granny out for lunch but she doesn't go out much now since her mobility is not as good - she only goes out to the hairdresser, chiropodist and appointments such as GP / hospital / vaccines.
We will visit her till lunchtime then leave her to enjoy her lunch while we nip out for some ourselves. Karen and Caroline will have to leave fairly early to get back to pick up granddaughter Sofia and great grandson Isaac from their schools.
Karen's little dog, Kaja, (it's a Bolognese) which is a tiny thing and still a puppy was attacked in the park this afternoon by a German Shepherd. Both dogs were on leads but the big dog suddenly lunged at the little one. Karen thought Kaja had died as once rescued she was not moving, not breathing, eyes bulging and tongue lolling out of its mouth but it started to breathe again. It had been difficult to get the dog off the puppy as it was gripping it and not letting go. Its owner tried but failed and started to hit it but that made it crush the puppy more. Karen was hysterical and her friend Andrea saved the day by grabbing the attacking dog's nose so it could not breathe through it. The dog tried to pull away so she gripped it harder and it let the puppy drop. Karen has only had the dog 4 weeks and it's lovely little thing.
At the vets it was checked over and had a puncture wound to its body, damage to both eyes and a wound the vet missed which Karen found at home, under the puppy's collar. The attacking dog's owner paid the vet's bill and said she will pay for any ongoing treatment. I think she was almost as traumatised as Karen. She said she'd had the dog 6 months and it had never done anything like this before, was good with her other dogs and said it was a rescue dog.
Kaja may well recover but one of her eyes is "not responding" as the vet says and the other eye, while responding, is very bloodshot. Karen asked was the lack of eye response not due to brain damage due to stopping breathing but the vet seemed to say otherwise. No blinking of this eye. It's so sad. I wouldn't be trusting that German Shepherd with any dogs or children after that. The lady is in her 70s who owns it Karen said.
Karen contacted the vet again when she found the other puncture wound and the vet asked for her to send photos, which she did. The puppy is on antibiotics. I hope she gets well.
