Spar

So what do you do when the water is suddenly turned off and you are informed that there is a leak in the area, which is being dealt with but they don’t know how long it will be. Well, of course, you go out for lunch! Off into Appleby and we happened to park outside the Spar and I realised I had not included this building in my survey of Appleby buildings.

Just Spar and squashed between the Tufton Arms Hotel and the Crown and Cushion, but actually an interesting Listed building. It is called Westmorland House and was originally a three storey 18th century house. Then in the mid-19th century an elaborate Victorian iron shop front was built out. The wrought iron work consists of slender twisted columns with highly ornamental capitals and linked arches. There is also a balcony with decorative iron railings. The extra shows it as it was in 1907.

Of course as soon as we had ordered lunch we got a message to say the water was back on. So I managed to clean windows after all!
