Dredding The Judgement Of A Grinning Demon

Today's image was inspired by reading a fascinating article in the New Review section of the Observer about an up and coming cartoonist called Anna Redman, who over the last few years has worked on various comic book projects including 2000AD (more of which later) but now wants to draw her own scripts rather than other people's.
Last November she gave up her job in a Leeds comic shop, hoping to make a living from full time cartooning - but her first year hadn't been easy as two gigs she had lined up had fallen through soon afterwards. She jumped from one small job to another but, after being nagged by her mum, she had entered The Observer/Faber graphic short story prize for emerging cartoonists for the first time and had just discovered she had won, with her story called Dancing Queen being a powerful meditation on a lost friend, and although still in a state of shock she is glad she gave up the day job.
This reminded me that I'd seen a wonderfully illustrated wall in a tiny alleyway in town - you can walk along it in only three or four strides - and I had intended to capture for a blip but it had been a dull day and I couldn't quite represent it in all its glory.
Today was a much sunnier day and as I had to go into town anyway I thought I'd return to see if I could get a better image. Luckily when I arrived there was just enough light to get my shot. I then discovered the artwork was originally intended to draw your attention to the nearby Grinning Demon Comic Shop. Sadly the shop itself is no longer in business but the alleyway artwork still remains to surprise and delight, or maybe even scare, any passers-by if they care to look.
The section of the wall that I have captured is a depiction of Judge Dredd, the most noted character of the British weekly science fiction orientated comic 2000AD, of which I was an avid reader back in the day. It was first published in 1977 and is renowned in the field internationally for its contributions of a number of artists and writers - including Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons, Grant Morrison, Mike McMahon, John Wagner, Alan Grant and Garth Ennis.
Judge Dredd is a law enforcement and judicial officer in the dystopian future city of Mega-City One, which covers most of the east coast of North America. He is a "street judge", empowered to summarily arrest, convict, sentence and execute criminals.
In this country the character of Dredd and his name is sometimes invoked in discussions of police states, authoritarianism and the rule of law. Over the years Judge Dredd has been hailed as one of the best satires of American and British culture with an uncanny ability to predict upcoming trends and events such as mass surveillance, the rise of populist leaders and pandemics.
