These City Walls
I met up with John in Exeter this morning. We'd planned to walk the city walls, then have some lunch and start making a plan for our next trip away. Much of the city wall dates back nearly two thousand years and about 72% can still be seen (if you know where to look).
My main blip is the gatehouse of Rougemont Castle. It was built in 1068 by William the Conqueror following Exeter's rebellion. The building through the central gates was Devon's County Court from 1607 until recently and three Devon Witches, the last people in England to be executed for witchcraft were tried and convicted at the Exeter Assizes in 1682.
I've added an extra of a lovely tree in full autumn colour just outside the wall at Southernhay.
